High School Updates Aloha KCS High School `Ohana, I hope that everyone is well and easily adjusting to the challenging changes to our lives at this time. The Hawai`i State Department of Education announced today the continuation of enrichment and distance earning through May 28, the last day of the 2019-20 school year. The decision was made based on the latest guidance and information from health officials and elected leaders. In addition, an announcement was made that traditional commencement ceremonies will be replaced with alternative celebrations due to safety concerns and social distancing guidance. We are currently working on alternate plans for all of our year end celebrations. You recently received an email from the KCS Admin informing you of how our enrichment lessons will be completed for the remainder of the school year. I would like to give you a few more details regarding the high school’s plan. Beginning Monday, April 20, our teachers will be offering more live, interactive instruction and virtual office hours to all of our students. They will be receiving a schedule for their grade level outlining the live offerings for each class, teacher and subject area. All work posted after Spring Break is considered to be enrichment learning. This work is optional in regards to the State level directive. We must take into account the equity issues that our families face. Not every student has the means to complete their work at this time. We do not want to punish those students. With that being said, all completed work turned in at this time will be put into Powerschool as “collected” only under Q4. Teachers will also offer feedback in Google Classroom regarding these assignments. We are offering a unique opportunity for our students to remediate work during this time. They are able to turn in late work in an effort to bring up their Q3 grades. Any student who would like to bring up their grades may request a remediation plan from their teachers. Those assignments will be collected and given numerical grades for Q3 coursework in Powerschool. In an effort to increase accountability and to engage more students we will be asking them to “sign in” each day online. Each advisor has shared a document with their advisory students where they can log in that they worked online each day. On their regularly scheduled Advisory class days only, the teachers will take attendance in Powerschool. This should also help parents to check that their children are completing school assignments. We will not push the issue of attendance, and it will not count against them in any form. It is strictly a way for all of us to see who is going online and working each day. Again, the goal here will be to increase student accountability, improve communications from the school to home, and boost overall student learning. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at this time. Mrs. Federoff Kihei Charter School is pleased to introduce a new communications tool called Anonymous Alerts®.
What is the Anonymous Alerts app? The Anonymous Alerts anti-bullying and safety app reporting system helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressure are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. The system allows for 1-way or 2-way anonymous encrypted communications between submitters (students, parents or community members) and district administration and/or school staff. Users of the system have the option to remain anonymous or reveal their identity when submitting a report. How does it work? To use this revolutionary new app, students, parents or other school personnel can simply visit the Kihei Charter School website and click on the “Anonymous Alerts” button or text link to submit a report expressing their concern. Anonymous Alerts® mobile applications can be downloaded directly from the Apple, Google Play or the Chrome stores. Kihei Charter School supplies students an activation code, making the app remarkably easy to use and students select which school the message should go to. In addition, informational posters explaining how to use the app will be displayed throughout schools and offices in the district.
