This message is to inform you that all 11th graders will take the state mandated Smarter Balanced Assessments next week on Tuesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 20. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is a multi-state, state-led association that develops assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics. The completion of these assessments are required for all 11th grade students, as mandated by the state of Hawaii. For more information about the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, please visit www.smarterbalanced.org.
About the tests.
Students will take the mathematics tests on Tuesday, April 18 and the English language arts tests on Thursday, April 20. For each subject area, there is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and a Performance Task (PT) test, lasting about two hours each. Students will take the CAT in the morning and then proceed to advisory and lunch. After lunch, students will take the PT and may leave when they are finished if they have a modified schedule and/or a parent can sign them out. Students should be finished testing around 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on both days.
Training and Practice tests for students and parents.
There are training and practice tests available on the Hawaii State Assessments website for students and parents to check out. The training tests allow students to gain familiarity with the testing portal and have about 6-10 questions. Practice tests allow students to engage deeper with the content of the tests and have about 30 questions.
To access these tests, visit http://alohahsap.org/SMARTERBALANCED/students/ and go to “Practice and Training Tests.” Take the tests in a guest session. There is a link to the answer keys to the right on the login page.
Students, please be sure to arrive on time, well-rested, well-hydrated and well-fed. Everyone will need headphones, so please bring yours if you have them. The school will be able to provide headphones to students who do not have them. You may not use your own calculator on the tests, but one will be provided on the screen during the portions of the test when they are allowed.
